At the Cape Town International Airport, Tension Structures was asked by MaC Architects to design a fabric structure ceiling to cover the steel roof sheeting of the central atrium of the Execujet Business Centre. The large space provided a passageway through the multiple story building, with the atrium acting as a skylight and central feature. Tension Structures designed a wave form structure that decorated the ceiling space. A challenge of the project was to tension the structure to the existing centre truss which hadn’t been designed to resist horizontal loads. Tension Structures made use of a complex pulley system which prevented sideways force being applied to the truss, and still supported the structure. The fabric structure ceiling provided a feature twice as beautiful as an ordinary paneled ceiling at a fraction of the price.
